Beyond Reviews: A Better Way to Understand Who You Can Trust
When we’re thinking about buying something from a new company, hiring a tradesperson or using a service for the first time, most of us check the reviews.
They’re useful. A collection of genuine customer experiences can tell us a lot about a business and, over the years, review platforms have given customers a much stronger voice.
But there’s an obvious problem: reviews don’t always give us the full picture.
Some are genuine, some may not be. Businesses can attract unfair reviews from competitors or people who have never actually been customers. At the other end of the scale, positive reviews can be encouraged, incentivised or manipulated. Even a completely genuine review is still one person’s experience.
So while a company with a 4.9-star rating might look excellent, the rating alone doesn’t necessarily tell you how that company actually operates.
This is where MyProtector is different
MyProtector is a trust and integrity platform.
We want to keep the good part of traditional review platforms – giving people a place to share their experiences – while adding another layer of information that helps users make a more informed decision.
We call that layer Quantum Signals™.
Rather than looking only at what people say about a company, Quantum Signals can look at other relevant information about the organisation itself. Depending on the type of profile, this might include its identity, transparency, terms and policies, consumer protection measures, professional or regulatory information and other available evidence.
Those signals contribute to the MyProtector Integrity Score™, presented on a simple scale from 0 to 10.
The idea is straightforward: reviews tell you about people’s experiences; the Integrity Score helps you understand the wider picture.
What goes into an Integrity Score?
There isn’t one piece of information that can tell you whether an organisation operates with integrity, which is why we don’t want the score to depend on a single measure.
Quantum Signals may look at areas such as:
- business or professional identity and verification;
- customer review patterns and review health;
- fair and transparent Terms & Conditions;
- refund, cancellation and complaints procedures;
- consumer protection measures;
- relevant insurance or financial protection;
- professional or regulatory registrations;
- transparency and accountability;
- whether available evidence is consistent with what an organisation says it does.
The information considered will also depend on what is being assessed. Checking a limited company isn’t the same as checking a professional, charity or public organisation, so it wouldn’t make sense to give every profile exactly the same checks.
For professionals, for example, relevant professional registers, qualifications and publicly available professional information such as LinkedIn may form part of the wider picture. Where an authoritative source exists, we would give that more importance than information someone has simply written about themselves.
Why not just use the star rating?
Because popularity and integrity aren’t necessarily the same thing.
A company could have a 4.9-star review score but have unclear refund terms, weak customer protection or very little information available to verify some of its claims.
Another company might have a less impressive 3.8-star rating. Perhaps some customers genuinely didn’t like the service. But the business may have transparent policies, verified details, fair terms and good consumer protection.
For illustration, those businesses could look something like this:
Company A
Customer reviews: ★★★★★ 4.9/5
Integrity Score™: 4.1/10
Company B
Customer reviews: ★★★★☆ 3.8/5
Integrity Score™: 9.3/10
That doesn’t mean MyProtector is telling you which company you must choose. It gives you more information on which to base your own decision.
And that’s an important distinction.
Reviews are still important
We aren’t trying to replace customer reviews.
Someone who has actually bought a product, dealt with a company’s customer service or hired a professional can provide information that you won’t necessarily find in an official document or public register.
We simply don’t think those experiences should be the only information available when deciding whether to trust someone.
MyProtector brings the two sides together: real customer experiences and evidence-based integrity signals.
Technology helps us do this at scale
There can be a huge amount of information to analyse, so MyProtector uses automated technology and AI to help identify and assess relevant Quantum Signals.
AI might help analyse policies and terms, identify unusual review patterns, compare information between different sources or highlight something that needs further attention.
But we don’t want an AI model simply deciding that a company or person is “good” or “bad”.
The technology helps analyse the evidence. The Integrity Score is then based on defined signals, scoring rules and the confidence we have in the available information.
Where possible, we also want users to be able to understand why a profile received its score rather than simply being presented with a number.
An Integrity Score of 8.7/10 is much more useful when you can see the signals behind it.
Integrity can change
A company that operates well today might change its policies next year. Insurance can expire. Professional registrations can change. Terms & Conditions get rewritten. New information becomes available.
For that reason, an Integrity Score shouldn’t be treated as a permanent certificate.
Quantum Signals can be checked again as information changes, allowing the Integrity Score to develop with the organisation it represents.
Paying MyProtector doesn’t buy a better score
This is an important principle for us.
Businesses and professionals may pay for MyProtector services, including verified profiles, additional features or enhanced monitoring. Paying MyProtector should never, by itself, improve an Integrity Score.
Additional verification may produce new evidence, and that evidence can affect the relevant Quantum Signals. But the commercial relationship itself doesn’t make someone more trustworthy.
We think maintaining that separation is essential if people are going to have confidence in the system.
Giving people more information before they decide
There will never be a single number that can guarantee whether a company, professional or organisation deserves your trust.
That’s not what the Integrity Score is intended to do.
Our aim is much more practical: give people a clearer picture than they can get from star ratings alone.
Reviews show you what other people experienced. Quantum Signals™ provide another layer of evidence. The Integrity Score™ brings that information together in a form that’s easy to understand.
You still make the decision.
You simply have more to base it on.
